Past Simple merupakan salah satu jenis tenses dalam bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menerangkan kejadian yang terjadi di waktu lampau dengan keterangan waktu yang jelas. Kata kerja yang digunakan adalah kata kerja bentuk kedua (V2) pada kalimat verbal, dan menggunakan 'was/were' pada kalimat nominal.
Keterangan waktu yang digunakan biasanya adalah:
1. Yesterday
2. Last week/ Last month/ Last night/Last ...
3. Two weeks a go/ a month a go/ .... a go
Kalimat dengan Past Simple dibagi menjadi dua (2), yaitu kalimat nominal dan kalimat verbal. Masing-masing memiliki pola sendiri.
1. Kalimat Nominal dalam Past Simple
Karena kalimat nominal tidak menggunakan kata kerja, maka diganti dengan menggunakan 'to be'.
(+) Subject + was/were + (Adj/Adv/Noun)
It was beautiful/She was at home/He was a pilot.
(-) Subject + Was/Were + Not + (Adj/Adv/Noun)
It was not beautiful/She was not at home/He was not a pilot.
(?) Was/Were + Subject + (Adj/Adv/Noun)
Was it beautiful? Was she at home? Was he a pilot?
2. Kalimat Verbal dalam Past Simple
Kalimat Verbal merupakan kalimat yang didalamnya mengandung 'kata kerja', sehingga tidak menggunakan 'to be'. Polanya adalah sebagai berikut:
(+) Subject + Verb2 + Object + Adverb of Time
They visited Prigi beach yesterday.
(-) Subject + Did + Not + Verb1 + Object + Adverb of Time
They did not visit Prigi beach yesterday.
(?) Did + Subject + Verb1 + Object + Adverb of Time
Did they visit Prigi beach yesterday?
*Jika ingin menggunakan kata tanya (what, when, where, why, who, and how), diletakkan sebelum kata kerja bantu 'did' pada kalimat verbal, dan 'was/were' pada kalimat nominal.
Conoth: Who was at home? atau Who did visit Prigi beach yesterday?
