Out door activity

Preparation and procedure
“STAR STICK” GAME
Aim                  : To practice reading comprehension
Preparation     : A set of question cards, a reading text, a set of star sticks
Organization   : Group work/pair work

Procedures
students discuss the questions
1. Ask students to work in pair. Each pair will get a set of question card and star sticks (based on the number of questions). They read and discuss the whole questions with his/her partner.
2. Tell students that each pair will have a runner and a secretary. So, they decide who will be the runner (find the answer) and who will be the secretary. The runner will run to a text, find the answer of each question, and dictate/tell the answer to his/her partner. After getting the answer, the secretary writes the answer on a star stick and pushes the stick in the ground. In this part, students can exchange their role.

3. A group/pair who can firstly finish all the questions will be the winner.

Note: This activity is applied outside the classroom. Yesterday (October, 30, 2016), Trenggalek sinau boso Inggris went to Pelang beach and used this game to practice reading comprehension. Students think that they really enjoyed this game.

Label me!

Students were ready to play a game

Students refreshed some vocabularies

Students labeled everything around them

Students had a competition
Yesterday, students had a warm activity to refresh some vocabularies about the things around them. This game is called 'Label me!' inspired by Flavia Amorim Sperandio from Brazil. Through this activity, students labeled each thing around them. To label each thing, they used sticky note pads and they played this game in pair work. For each group/pair  had five minutes to label everything and a group/pair who had the most things labeled, they would be the winner.

Students think that this activity is very interesting and challenging, they write, choose, and run everywhere very fast. They like this game so much because it makes them fun and energetic. Thanks a lot for sharing this idea, it is really helpful and useful.

Hidden words, at the zoo, chain game

A student throws a dice

each student writes a sentence about the picture

student takes in turn playing this game
Yesterday, students had some activities in learning English, they were "at the zoo" and "hidden words". These are to learn how to revise animal vocabulary and produce simple sentences in describing an animal. These activities are the ideas from Raisa Dukajska (Latvia) and Iryna Sukhodolska (Ukraine). Using these activities, students could practice some vocabularies and describing animal in an interesting way. First, students played the hidden words game. Then, they had to find a name of animal in a sentence written on the white board. This is very challenging and they liked it. After that, they had 'at the zoo' to extend the previous activity. Here, students had to write a sentence about six pictures of animals in turn by throwing a dice. Number on a dice corresponds a number of animal on the board. So, it goes on, until all animals have been described. After having both activities, students played chain game about the same topic. This idea comes from Eliana Fernandez Malla (Dominican Republic/Latvia). Each player/student must add a list of word in turn. Start from the main sentence on the board (The children visit the zoo and see an elephant, ....), until the sentence becomes longer and longer. At last, student repeated the long sentence.
Thank you very much Raisa, Iryna, and Eliana for sharing the ideas, these are really helpful and inspiring.

The Power Of "Song"

 Aim                  : To revise the vocabulary of the past verbs.
Preparation     : You will need a sheet of paper with missing lyric and audio device. Make flashcards of past verbs or elicit some those verbs on the whiteboard. The verbs may include regular and irregular form; took, read, wrote, left, was, went, ran, had, said, fell, heard, caught, told, married, kept, got, tried. On another side of the card you may write the infinitive form of those verbs.
 Procedures
1.    Show the flashcards of the verbs or elicit them on the whiteboard. After that, you may have some drilling activities such as search word game, snake and ladder game, or another activity.
2.    Distribute the missing lyric to the whole class or ask the students to have group/pair work. Tell them that they have a missing lyric activity by filling the gaps of the song while listening to the song.
3.    Play the song twice or three times.

Alternative ways of using song in the classroom;
1.    Play a video of a song with its lyric and ask the students to write down/jot down the target language which is learnt, for example learning the use of modals, “to and infinitive”, past sentences, etc.
2.    Play a song to learn pronunciation of certain target language, for example learning the sound of suffixes “-ed and –d”.
Here are few of songs can be used:
·         “Don’t cry Joni” to study past verbs.
·         “I just called to say I love you” to study the use of “to and infinitive”.
·         “Always” to study the use of modal auxiliaries.

the missing lyric sheet would be;
