The Power Of "Song"

 Aim                  : To revise the vocabulary of the past verbs.
Preparation     : You will need a sheet of paper with missing lyric and audio device. Make flashcards of past verbs or elicit some those verbs on the whiteboard. The verbs may include regular and irregular form; took, read, wrote, left, was, went, ran, had, said, fell, heard, caught, told, married, kept, got, tried. On another side of the card you may write the infinitive form of those verbs.
 Procedures
1.    Show the flashcards of the verbs or elicit them on the whiteboard. After that, you may have some drilling activities such as search word game, snake and ladder game, or another activity.
2.    Distribute the missing lyric to the whole class or ask the students to have group/pair work. Tell them that they have a missing lyric activity by filling the gaps of the song while listening to the song.
3.    Play the song twice or three times.

Alternative ways of using song in the classroom;
1.    Play a video of a song with its lyric and ask the students to write down/jot down the target language which is learnt, for example learning the use of modals, “to and infinitive”, past sentences, etc.
2.    Play a song to learn pronunciation of certain target language, for example learning the sound of suffixes “-ed and –d”.
Here are few of songs can be used:
·         “Don’t cry Joni” to study past verbs.
·         “I just called to say I love you” to study the use of “to and infinitive”.
·         “Always” to study the use of modal auxiliaries.

the missing lyric sheet would be;
